Sustainable Fisheries in The Bahamas

Nature Analytics has been involved in a series of projects with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and The Bahamas Department of Marine Resources (DMR), all aimed at achieving sustainable fisheries in The Bahamas. Over several years, this series of projects has contributed to TNC’s FishPath process.

The Project

Through applied capacity-building initiatives, conducting rigorous research, and enhancing communication efforts, we have contributed to several key initiatives that are part of a larger narrative of sustainable fisheries in the Bahamas. This post reflects our shared commitment to the future of Bahamian fisheries.

Our Role

Our work in The Bahamas began with a focus on decision-support for queen conch size limits, providing data-driven recommendations to DMR. We also carried out quantitative analysis of management options for grouper-snapper fisheries.

Communication has also been a critical component of our efforts. We created tailored communication materials to share size-limit analyses for grouper-snapper species with stakeholders and decision-makers. These materials were designed to translate complex scientific data into accessible information, facilitating meaningful engagement in the decision-making process.

In addition to research and analysis, applied capacity building initiatives were implemented with DMR staff, providing learning opportunities related to fisheries data analysis. This initiative focused on empowering DMR staff, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to advance the management their marine resources.
