decision support

MSE is used to simulate the interactions between data collection, data analysis, and fishery regulations in a way that highlights how well these interacting parts can be expected to result in the achievement of fishery management objectives.

MSE is used to provide scientific support for the design and implementation of a management strategy. MSE helps to inform policy development through simulation of fisheries regulations prior to real-world application.

How we apply MSE

We take a nuanced approach to specifying  population dynamics models that are used in MSE. We develop specialized models that represent unique life histories, multi-species fisheries, and spatially complex fish stocks.

MSE is a form of trade-off analysis. Not all fishery harvest strategies will produce the same outcomes. Understanding trade-offs between conservation and fishery capacity to provide food and economic benefits is central to successful fishery management.

Communication is key.  Through engagement with stakeholders and decision-makers we aim to provide clarity in the delivery of scientific information. MSE often presents an opportunity for collaboration between scientists, stakeholders, and decision-makers.
